Scandinavian handrails since 1945

Wooden handrails, made to measure.

A handrail is the endpoint of a thought. A line that begins in the architect's mind, moves through the building and finally lands in a hand. In that hand, everything is decided.

Our story

Curved timber handrail following a spiral staircase

Every handrail is a building's last handshake with its guest.

A meeting. A moment of contact.

In 1945, the world was rebuilding. In Herrljunga, Henry Svensson decided that even the smallest detail deserved to be made well. Eighty years later, nothing has changed.

Oslo Opera House

650 metres of handrail, measured on site.

Snøhetta's marble iceberg on the Bjørvika waterfront is the largest cultural building in Norway since the Middle Ages, and a protected monument today. It is also a building people are invited to walk on — the roof rises out of the fjord as a public surface.

Every run was measured on site, shaped and finished for its exact position. In a building of that complexity a handrail cannot be a catalogue item — the geometry decides, and the workshop follows.

Who we work with

  • For architects

Handrails made to your drawing rather than chosen from a range. Samples, specification support and project references — from first sketch to installed handrail.

    Specification support
  • For partners

We work with flooring brands, staircase manufacturers and material suppliers who share our belief that every detail deserves the same care. One material story, all the way through.

Made to drawing

When the stair is not a standard stair

A handrail that follows a sweep like this one is drawn from measurements taken on site, shaped in the workshop and fitted in place. It is the same work as a straight run — there is simply more of it.

Partners

One material story, all the way through.

Two kinds of partnership interest us most. In both, the architect specifies once and the material carries through — floor to hand, structure to contact.

With flooring manufacturers

Floor to hand

The floor decides the character of a room before any detail is noticed. We make the handrail in the same species, surface and grain, produced to match — so the material continues rather than starts over.

With staircase manufacturers

Structure to contact

Steel and concrete stairs are engineered for load and geometry. Where the structure ends, the timber begins — the handrail is the first thing a hand meets, and what decides whether a staircase feels finished.

Anything else

Have an idea?

These are the two partnerships we look for, not the only two that work. If timber belongs somewhere in what you make, write to us and we will tell you what is possible.
